STRATFORD NEWS.
TOWN HALL WHO IS RESPONSIBLE'! (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. The Town Hall i 9 owned by the Borough Council, who have leased the place to Mr. F. J. Foley, but the Council undertake to provide a caretaker, and look after the building. Last Tuesday night the hall was packed to see the Johnson-Willard fight film, and the lessee went round the building to see if the lire escapes were in order. On coming to the main fire escape door it could not be opened, and on making investigations it was found that it was nailed up. It appears that one of the hinges on the door had rusted away. The door was in this condition over a month ago, and yet nothing was done by the Council. It was surely the duty of the Council to see that the fire escapes were in order. The public look to the Council to see that such important, tilings as fire escapes are 111 working order. The whole matter demands ail inquiry, and should not be easily passed over by the Council. GENERAL NOTES. Stratford on Saturday night presented a miserable appearance. It was raining hard, and the Council, in its cheeseparing economy, had decided not to light the streets during the full moon period. Oil Saturday night, unfortunately, the moon did not appear, and those residents who had occasion to go L> town had to put up with the' inconvenience of the darkness and muddy footpath*. There was no earthly reason why the streets should not have been lighted. While 011 this matter, complaints have been made about the light at the Post Office. Last evening the usual war news was put up 011 the board, but the place was in total darkness. Tt appears that the light over the entrance is attached to the street lighting, consequently when the street lights are out the postal entrance is in darness. This should be altered, if only to suit the conveniences of those who may wish to post letters at night. Besides, an accident may easily occur through people falling down the high steps leading to the postal boxes. Wliangamomona residents who hate occasion to use the train are anxious to know if the Railway Department intend carrying out their promise to provide the carriages with footwarmers during the coming winter. These are certainly needed.
