PARCELS FOR SOLDIERS.
HOW TO -DIRECT THEM. WHAT IS USEFUL. (From Our Own Correspondent)-. Wellington, April 13. Replying to an enquiry which reached him recently, the Ministe. for Defence (Hon. J. 411 en) has given some particulars regarding the rules governing- the despatch of articles to New Zcalunders who may be prisoners of war in Turkey or elsewhere. A strict observance of these rules is necessary it parcels are to reach their destination. "Parcels may be forwarded post free addressed to the prisoner of war, iaro of the International. Red Cross at Geneva," (says the Minister in his letter. "The rank, full name, number and regiment of the prisoner of war should lie clearly stated, and the address written on botli sides of the parcel. ' On no account must any note or other written matter be placed inside the parcel. "Parcels cannot be accepted unless they are very strongly packed. Ordinary thin cardboard boxes and thin wooden boxes should not be used, nor does a singlo sheet of ordinary brown paper afford sufficient protection. It is suggested by the Prisoner of War Bureau that the following packages iliDuld be used: Biscuit tins, strong wooden boxes, or several sheets of stout packing , "Parcels should je packed in =uch a way as to not impede examination by the censors. The name and address o." the sender must be phown on the parcel. foodstuffs of a perishable nature and matches must not be sent. On no account must newspapers he used i'or wrapping up piircnds, nor must newspaper cuttings be included in parcels. "The Red Cvo.-w Society suggests Oi.it the following articles are likely to prove useful to prisoners of war: Biscuits, butter, cake, cheese, chocolate, coffee and milk, cocoa and inilk,, dried fruit, prepared outs sugar, light undorcloth-. ir.g, cards and games, and tobacco."
