STRATFORD NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)' Stratford, Tlmwdsy. The man Potter, who was recently charged with an alleged assault and sent to the Porirua, Mental Hospital, bad his case before the court ag*in today. Sergeant Dale was granted a further remand, as he was waiting for instructions from headquarters as to any future proceedings. 'David Maxwell, of Toko, surrendered to his bail on a charge that ho did commit an obscene aet. The defendant elected to be dealt with summarily. The girl, aged 3 years, gave her evidence fairly clearly," and after the prosecution had finished the Court visited the scene of the alleged occurrence. The case was adjourned for one week, owing to the absence of a constable, who was an important witness and was away on police duty. Maxwell was released on bail, himself in £IOO and one surety of a like amount. A most enthusiastic meeting of the Soldiers' Day Committee was held on Wednesday night, when progress reports from all sub-committees were read and adopted. The keynote of this great carnival is "organisation," and they seem to have got it. Mr. Robert Masters is hon. secretary, and things will "hum" some on Easter Monday. This is to he "Taranaki Soldiers' Day,'' and "the day" will be Taranaki's endeavor to show what the land of butter-fat can do for the heroes who have fought and —yes —died for us. The whole of the money goes to the Taranaki fund of which Mr. Wilson, your late mayor, Is chairman. There will be special trains from everywhere, and the Eltham, Kaponga, Hawera, Stratford, New Plymouth, and other bands will be present. Considering the protection that primary producers have had in getting" their products to big price markets they will respond with' thankful hearts on Soldiers' Day. Before another week passes all Taranaki will be interested and talking of what can he done to show the world that Taranaki is not unthankful for the great benefits the "hoys" by their actions have conferred on the women and children of this very much blest country.
