The average association eow gave 70S lbs milk, 4:2 test, 30.2"1bs butter-fat. During the seasons work the best eow has produced to March 18 563,811b fat in 253 days; the worst eow has produced 33.301bs fat in 103 days. NEWS AND NOTES. By proclamation in last, week's Gazette considerable areas of land in theTlawke's Bay and Southland districts are set apart for disposal by way of sale or lease, under special tenure, for returned soldiers. It would appear (says the Timaru Herald) that land seekers have not a very high opinion of the Government's latest purchase of land in South Canterbury—tli« Kowhati Settlement, in the Waimate district. When applications for the five sections closed only 19 were received. Threshing operations have now been pretty nearly completed in North Otago, many of the mill-owners reporting that they have pulled in their mills for the season. The results generally have been a good deal below the average (says the Mail) and the figures to hand go to show that the estimate given in January of 15 bushels of wheat per acre for the whole of North Otago will turn out not far from the mark.

Mr. F.. W. Buttle, Kilburn Manor, Yorkshire, lias lost his famous hackney stallion Rosador, which died a natural death on January 14, at the age of 24 years. Rosador was probably the sire of more successful "show" horses than any hackney of his day. His record, put briefly, is the championship of the London Hackney Show three times (the last occasion being when he was fifteen' years old); the sire of 311 winners at I the Hackney Society's Show, including seven champions and ci;,'ht reserve champions. Rosador was by Danegolt, and his dam was one of the late llr. F. Cook's best mares. Though, only just over 15 hands 2in., he was a very stylish horse.

A fine of £3 and costs lias been imposed by Mr. Loughnan, S.M., at Blenheim, in a case which Mr. F. N. Dillon, owner of the Lecfield Estate, Marlborough, was charged with having failed to take proper means for the eradication of rabbits on the property. The local Fields Inspector at Ashburton has been conducting experiments in lucerne-growing, on Mr. John Hunt'* farm at Hampstead, where four quarteracre plots are being grown, viz., with lime, inoculated soil, and no tcatment. Mr. 11. F. Nicoll has. five acres of lucerne, which was sown in November. It was cut twelve weeks after sowing, when the growth as twelve inches high, and on March 0 it was close on two feet -high. Tlie growth was well tined, and the seed was sown in drills 14 inches apart.
