EDUCATION BOARD.
THE MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs H. Trimble (chairman), A. Morton, E. Marfell, I°. Ma-ckay, J, Young, R. Masters and G. A. Adlaui. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. A. H. lialcombe and the liev. A. B. Chappell. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer reported:—Kaimata: The additions to the school were completed and sundry repairs attended to. New desks were also installed. Courfcenay Street School: Outside painting and general repairs are being attended to. Leppertou: Dual desks were installed and platforms removed, new lavatory basins and repairs were attended to; new outoffices were also erected. Piko: The outside painting of the school was attended to and an extra sash frame placed in the class-room. Mimi: A shelter shed Was erected at the school. Uruti: The outside of both school and residence were painted and general repairs attended to.. The report was adopted. ELECTION OF BOARD. The Education Department wrote that for the purposes of the first election oi education boards under the new Act it has now been possible to avoid the necessity of altering the boundaries of the school districts by embodying in the regulations for the election a provision that such a school district "shall be deemed to be in that area in which the principal school building is situated, The letter added: "Tile standing requirement of the Act will require, however, the alterations of boundaries to lie made sooner or later, and to facilitate this step I now further inform you that it is proposed to introduce legislation next session providing tV.at the parent of a pupil, even if a non-resident householder, shall be eligible for election to the school committee of the school'attended, so that those most directly interested in a school may have the opportunity to serve on the committee." The letter was received. TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS. ' The chairman reported that during the interim he had made the following temporary appointments:—Stratford District High School, Miss F. Smith, fourth assistant; Waitara, Miss Dorothy Simpson, assistant; Tataraimaka, Miss Mur- ; iel Kirton, assistant; Franklcy, Miss Nora Moore, assistant; Puniwhakau, Miss Rosa Eason, sole charge-, Dudley, Miss E. Easton, sole charge; Mimi, Mrs. M. Peppereil, sole charge; Patua. Mr, Homan, sole charge; Egmont Village, Miss E. Drake, assistant; Norfolk, Miss A. Mace, assistant; Norfolk, Miss Dorothy Simpon, assistant; Mt. Messenger, Miss P. Murray, sole charge; Dudley, Mrs. G. Brereton, sole charge; Okato, Miss Doris Mason, assistant; Marco, Mrs. E. Bacon, sole charge. The report was adopted. COOKERY INSTRUCTRESS. The chairman reported:—"As Miss Grant did not take iip duty after the holidays it became necessary to make temporary arrangements for carrying on the work at Stratford, as otherwise the classes would have been held at too late a period of the year. I have arranged that Miss Papps shall lake the cookery classes unti, a permanent teacher is uppointed.'' The chairman's action was confirmed. GENERAL. On ..he recommendation of the Finance Committee, Miss Menzios, commercial teacher at the Technical College, was granted an increase in salary. A similar application from Mr. Ellis, agricultural instructor, was deferred. Mrs. Browne (of Wangamii) was appointed ;l n assistant instructress at the Technical College. The action of tile Whangamomona, Hurioa and Egmont Village school committees in closing their schools on account of illness was confirmed. Tlie following resignations of teachers were accepted:—Miss R. Easton (Dudlev). Miss K. Wiiificld (Norfolk). Miss M. E. O'Rorke (Waihi), Miss .1. E. Auld (Okato), Miss K. Tavlor (Stratford), Miss J. Wilson (Central). M'ss E. Death (l-'itzrov), and Mr. E. H. Cutler (Kaimata)." The overseer was instructs! to report on the condition of the Radnor school. with an estimate of the cost of altering the building so as to make it fit for a school. Permission was granted to any school committee wishing to do so to close its school on March I), the occasion of the gala day at the East End.
