1 ... RETURNS FROM AMERICA. VISIT TO FAMOUS OBSERVATORY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 31. Br. Adams, astronomical observer for the New Zealand Government, returned by the Maitai after a year's residence at the famous Lick observatory in California. He will prepare a report for the Government. The observatory is 4200 ft up in the mountains, and during the winter the cold is sufficient to burtt water pipes. It has a telescope 57ft in length and 30in in diameter. Dr. Adams' visit was 'to make himself acquainted with astronomers' work and observe how they specialised in various branches. On Saturday nights the place was thrown open to the. public, and line 3 of motors might be seen climbing the hill. As many as 300 people visit it every Saturday. As to the opinion of the staff on the moon and planets, Dr. Adams said the observers were very discreet and avoided theories and only recorded facts. The observatory was like a factory, working to a set routine day and night. The doctor also visited the Mt. Wilson Observatory, six l thousand feet up, where they had a telescope with a hundred inch reflector.
