This decision Wu pronounced at a' public meeting heft tonight, called to discuss means for rftislng funds for the sick and wounded soldi«r«. The Mayor (Mr. K Dixon) pretlded over a large attendance. The chairman said that a list for donations for sick and wounded soldiers had been recently opened in Hawera, but the response lad been very disappointing. Consequently it was decided to call the people to* gether to decide on means for raiting an amount worthy of the district. At his invitation Messrs W. Lints (organ* iser of the Carnival), J. Clarke, and A, L. Humphries attended' the meetulg. Mr. Lints explained in detail the methods by which the Battle of the Bullion in Taranaki would be maatged) and' stated that the support of most parts of Taranaki had been accorded the scheme.
Mr. J. Clarke also addressed the meeting. Ho said there should S» no difficulty in raising £-20,000 in Hjunnfc district alone. Mr. Lints said that the system in Taranaki would not be the tame as it Wanganui, and there would be nothing which anyone could object to. 'Mr. G. V. There weto advantages in a Battle of the Bullion over a Queen Carnival, and the more competition was aroused the betttt. Mr. J. B. Murdoch moved that the district disapprove of the (Battle of toe Bullion and approve of drawing up e> system by which to get straight-out i voluntary contributions.
Mr. J. R. Corrigan, in seconding the resolution, said the Battle of the Bullion scheme would draw upon town people,. and not touch the men on the lMd„. who were waking money out of the w». He suggested that committees should he appointed to canvass the district thoroughly. There were plenty of farmers who would give £SOO, and he would have much pleasure in giving £3OO now. He declared that they cosa get £IOO,OOO by this means.
Mr. Corrigan then handed up a cheque : for £SOO, and the chairman announced that Mr. G. V. Pearce had promised £250. The resolution was carried.
THE WAITARA ARffY* TO BE KNOWN AS "BIBS/VMS.* At a meeting of the committee of tha Waitara Army, it was decided that tha North Taranaki army, in, connection with the "Battle of the Bullion," should ' bek nowri as the "Diehards," and that the colors for badges should be green and gold. Mr, Were was appointed hon. secretary for the carnival, The carnival in Waitara was gone in« to in all its aspects, and it was decided that it should be held in the Camp Reserve on Thursdy, Friday and Saturday, February 17, 18 and 10. A programme was drawn up as follows:— Thursday: Floral Fete, Horticultural Show and Children's Day, opening with a procwsion. Friday: Sports' Ray, Saturday: Fancy dress cricket match, Town v. Country. Entertninments will be held every • evening on these dates. ' ■Mr. W. Andrew was appointed general director. Committees were set up as follows: . Floral Fete: The ladles. Sports: Mesin ■ .' Ford, Malictt, W. H. Nosworthy. Eggle, ton, H. MeKenzic, with power to add' to their number. Cricket Match: Rev. ~> Harrison. Ground Committee: Mosul Husc and .Tolins. Music: Mrs. Marlow, "' Miss Brough and Mr. T. Hughe*. Ad- '\ vertising Director: Mr. Uennie.
