AN OLD OFFENDER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. At the Supreme Court to-day John Mattson, an elderly man, was sentenced by the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) to one month's imprisonment on each of five charges of false pretences, the terms to be cumulative, and he was declared to bo an habitual criminal. Prisoner was released by the Prisons Board some time ago on the understanding that lie Would never touch liquor again.

DUTY ON FLOUR.

T Napier, Yesterday. The New Zealand United Master Bakers' Conference concluded its deliberations last night. The following motion, to lie forwarded to the Premier, .van carried: "The Xew Zealand Master Bakers' Association Conference regret that the Government reimposed the duty on (lour, and by so doing undermined the price of wheat, thus allowing the market price to be inflated by farmers and speculators. Since the reimposition of the duty flour has frequently advanced to the extent of £2 in five weeks. The conference therefore strongly urges the Government to remove the duty on flour and lix the price of wheat for the incoming season within reasonable limits, in order that flour may not be sold at exorbitant prices."
