THE CARNIVAL.

A TARANAKI SCHEME. • CONFERENCE ON FRIDAY, Tim organiser of the Carnival to be hold in New Plymouth next month (Mr. W. Lints) spent a busy clay yesterday ■launching his initial plans. The principal features of the scheme—a Battle of the Bullion, a Fete of Nations, and Paddy's Market—were described in yesterday's issue, and gave some idea of the mass of details to be arranged. On Friday an important step forward will be taken. That day a meeting of the Taranaki War Relief Executive will be held at Stratford, and the promoters of the Carnival will avail themselves of this opportunity to place their proposals before the Executive, through which it is hoped to obtain the support of all the Patriotic Committees in Taranki. To localise the scope of the Carnival iby confining it >to New Plymouth district will allow of Mr, Lints' scheme being carried out in full, but the benefit to the wounded soldiers wilt simply mean a matter of about £IO,OOO, But if Taranaki is united and every town joins in the scheme, a splendid result will follow, and it is confidently expected that then £50,000 to £60,000 will" be gathered. The Wanganui Carnival—and it is proposed to work here on similar lines to< Wanganui— produced about £70,000, and the secret" of Wanganni's success Jay in the fact that all parts of the province pulled together. The Battle of the Bullion offers excellent facilities for a provincial effort, for then each of the eight districts managed by Patriotic Committees could raise an army, and splendid competition could be aroused in a battle of armies between the different districts. The Fete of Nations and Paddy's Market will be lipid in New Plymouth, but they will be 'by no means local functions, for arrangements will be made by which the profits from these sources will be divided proportionately amongst the various armies. The full details of the scheme will he placed before the meeting-nil Friday, and it is hoped the delegates will realise the benefits of a Taranaki Carnival.
