INTENSE HEAT. By Cable,—Press Association—Copyright Received Jan. 10, 11.15 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 10. Sweltering heat has been general for several days and rain is badly wanted. MURDER OF A GIRL Sydney, Jan. 10. A tragedy has taken place near Port Macquarie. A half-caste named Ritchie fatally cut the throat of a girl named Dane, and dangerously gashed his own throat. After living with Ritchie, Dane took up with another man. BROKEN HILL STRIKE. Sydney, Jan. 10. The strike at the Broken Hill Proprietary steel works, which has for many weeks held up shell making, has been settled, the men's claims being compromised.
CONSTABLE COMMITS MURDER. Received Jan. 11, 1.35 a.m. Sydney, Jan, 10. A tragedy occurred in Castlereagh Street to-night,'when 'a probationary constable named John Fisher shot his sister-in-law, Jessie Nealon, dead and badly wounded his wife. The Fishers were staying with Nealon, and in a statement made by Fisher after his arrest he said that he wished to leave the Nealons. His wife refused tn do so, and in a tit of temper he lost control of himself, and after some bickering drew his revolver and did the shooting. The wife is wounded in the breast and shoulder.
