PRICE OF COAL. By Cable.—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Dec. 22. The Commodities Commission agreed 1o the prpposal of the northern colliery proprietors to increase the selling price of coal from lis to 12s per ton f.o.b, Newcastle from the Ist of next month. On behalf of the proprietors it was pointed out that this was the producers' price and did not affect the wholesale or retail prices. MELBOURNE WHARF STRIKE. Melbourne, Dec. 22. The wheat trouble has spread here. As a protest against the award fixing the minimum rates for loading wheat, the wharfies stopped loading 5000 tons, which the Federal Government is shipping to Britain, demanding 2s an hour. WHEAT FOR EUROPE. Melbourne, Dec. 23. Mr. Hughes states that 100,000 tons of wheat have been sold to the British and French Governments. ENDOWMENT OF RESEARCH. Melbourne, Dec. 23. The Federal Government is prepared to spend £500,000 on an institution to conduct scientific research in relation to industry. SYDNEY'S CHRISTMAS TRADE. Sydney, Dec. 23. Shopkeepers state that the Christmas trade is better than ever. This is attributed to the recent rain and the splendid harvest.
