RHODES SCHOLAR FOR 1916.
! LIEUT. ATHOL HUDSON SELECTED. Lieut. Athol Hudson, the Victoria College candidate, who has been selected as Rhodes Scholar for 1915, is at present a member of the Expeditionary Force in training at Trentham, holding the rank of second lieutenant. He is 21 years of age. He was educated at Nelson > College from 1903 to 1906, and at the I Waitaki Boys' High School, Oamaru, I from 1907 to 1911 (inclusive). Since .leaving school he has been an undergraduate of Victoria University College up to this present year. In 1907 he passed the .Senior Free Place examination, atkd in 1908, at the age of 14 years, he obtained a Senior Education Board (Otago) Scholarship, being fourth on the list, the scholarship being open to candidates under the age of 1G years. In that year also he passed the matriculation examination of the New Zealand University. In 1911 he was dux of the Waitaki Boys' High School, and obtained sixth place on the list of junior university scholars. In 1912, at the Victoria University College, he passed the first section of the B.Sc. degree in mathematics (pure and applied), chemistry, and French. Early in August, 1914, he enlisted for service and went with the Advance Expeditionary Forca to Samoa, where'he held the rank of corporal. He was granted third year terms by the Professorial Board in chemistry, physies, and zoology. On the athletic side, Lieut. Hudson also has a very fine record, being a, recognised drift-class long-distance runner, whilst in swimming, boxing, football, and cricket he has honorable records.
