A PERSONAL APPEAL. SCHEME TO RAISE RECRUIT-:. Sydney, Dec. !). ■ The recruiting scheme for the new fifty-thousand army Ims bean issued. It is the quota system in conjunction with local committees. An appeal in writing is made to every able-bodied man who is required, and the reply should state his intentions and disabilities with regard to enlistment. Each local committee will judge tile adequacy of the answers, and, if the reasons against immediate enlistment are valid, will relegate the men to a later class. If the appeal is neglected or the reply is unsatisfactory, a personal appeal will be made. Local committees are responsible to the State War Council, which is responsible to the Federal Council. The New South Wales share of the new army, and reinforcements for the old and new units to June, will be 30.000 men. Melbourne, Dec. fl. In the Assembly. -Mr. Pearce stated that the personal inquiries originally instituted with regard to the new recruiting scheme had ihpou considerably modified. The Assembly unanimously passed a motion undertaking' to cooperate with the Federal Government. Brisbane, Dec. !)." ! Speaking at Bmnlaberg, Mr. Hughes estimated, that the next year's war expenditure would be over fifty millions. A deputation of the Industrial Council demanded the withdrawal of the new recruiting scheme, especially the questions. Mr. Hughes, refusing, said that if the unions assisted the Government compulsion ,would he unnecessary. TROOPS FROM MALAY. Sydney, Dee. 9. A visitor from the Malay States sayi that of a population of eight thousand Europeans six thousand have gone to the front. Whites, natives, and Chinese are campaigning for funds to present an air fleet of fifteen units to Britain. The campaign is organised by 0. Alma Baker, a New Zealander. Sufi'i■cient money for ten units has already been supplied. The natives and Chinese are very loyal, and are large subscribers to the funds. Although the war efforts have been heavy, there is no national debt. A dreadnought, costing two and a half millions, was recently presented to Britain, and paid for out of revenue.
