RUSSIA'S TASK.
GERMAN DEFENCES. A HIGHLY SKILFUL SCHEME. Pclrograd, Dee. 8. A remarkable German defence measure, enabling them to hold the front Willi the scantiest of defence force-, was brought to light by the Russian successes at Kemniern. The (ield fortifications surpass anything yet seen. There are seven row*'of trenches, and a whole underground city lor shelter. A prisoner says that the Kaiser, in October, declared that the soldiers must dig. Men who would not dig their comrades' shelters must dig their comrades' graves. The entanglements in places are two hundred yards deep. A portion consists of lough wattle, in order to economise in wire, and it is equally difficult to hack through. The Germans in the middle course of the Dvina -burn off the forests and plant sharp branches as ebevaux-de-I'rise, which are sometimes a mile deep and sewn with mines csplodlog on contact.
