WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Tuesday. NORTH TARANAKI PATRIOTIC LEAGUE. The usual weekly meeting of the League was held in the Council Chambers last evening, his Worship the Mayor presiding. A letter was received from the Defence Office, 'Palmerston North, asking the assistance of this League in procuring temporary work for men waiting to join reinforcements. The secretary of the Shilling Christmas Gift Fund wrote asking the League to organise collections on Gallipoli Day (20th November), to raise money for the purpose of sending a'box of'tobacco and chocolate to each of the Allied troops at Gallipoli. A resolution was carried to the effect that each of the male members of the committee present should raise the sum of £2 by subscriptions towards the fund. Mr. S. fi. Eraser stated that Mr. H. 'Prosser had donated a goat and kid to be sold for the Belgian Fund. It was resolved that the former delegates, with others that so desire, attend the meeting at Leppcrton on Thursday. It was proposed to organise the raffle of a tourist ticket, any profits derived to be devoted to the Wounded Soldiers' and the Belgian Fund. It was decided to inform the social committee that at the last meeting of the League, members were given to understand by three members of the social committee who were present, that it would be inadvisable to hold socials to farewell departing troopers in future, and that the general committee regrets the friction which has arisen through the misunderstanding. It was also decided that in the event of any further function being held in connection with departing members of reinforcements that the presentations be made at that function. FOR THE FRONT. The following enlistments have been received by Mr Johns:—: T. Pearson, Waitara. T. R. Hine, Tikorangi W. Prcssland, Mokau. J. Lewis, Mokau. H. W. Woodhead, Rahotu E. S. Elliot, Onaero.
GENERAL. A pleasant evening was spent on Saturday, when the members of the Waitara Band met to bid farewell to three of their number—Messrs. Redmond, Milligan and Topp—who left to join the 10th Reinforcements. .On behalf of the members, Bandmaster T. Hughes presented Mr. Milligan with a ease of pipes, and Messrs. Topp and Redmond eacli with a cigarette case and holder, and he expressed the hope that after the war they would be able to occupy the places that are being left vacant for them. The children attending the Convent School have decided that the returns from their annual concert which takes place in St. John's Hall on December 2nd are to be devoted to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. An excellent programme of action songs, musical drills, dialogues, etc., will be submitted. Twenty-eight men from Waitara and surrounding district left by the 7 p.m. train last evening to join the I.oth Reinforcements. There was a large muster of Senior Cadets, and National Reserves, and headed by the band, the men marched from the Drill Hall to the station, where a largo and enthusiastic crowd had gatheved to do tltem honor. The Mayor briefly addressed the men and made a presentation to ea-h.
