YANKEE PRESS DISTORTION. AN EXPLANATION. London, Nov. 14. The Observer accepts .Mr. Israel Zangwill's explanation of his article published in America as being sarcastic and misunderstood. He complains of distortions by the American press. (The Observer's New York correspondent on November 7 drew attention to the pro-German crusade ot Mr. Zangwill, the well-known novelist, in America, especially his disgraceful articles in the Pro-German Sunday American, in j which he sneeringly says about recruiting: "Christ was in the army and the Madonna made munitions.") The Departmental Committee' of .Advice on the employment of women, .in an interim report, states that clerks of military age number three hundred thousand, whereof at least half are available tor military service. The bulk of the substitutes for them must be women, and the committee recommends that Chambers of Commerce, and educationalists iii leading centres should organise to train women as clerks as soon as possible. ' "
