STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. Miss Spriggiits, daughter of Mr. ,T. Spriggins, of Wharehina, died in the Stratford Hospital this morning. The internment is to take place at Wanganui. An inquest was held at Toko to-day, on the infant son of Mr. T Goocli, when a verdict of natural causes was recorded. Mr. T. Wilford has written the Borougli Council regretting his inability to be present at the send-off on Thursday night. Mr. D. McLaren, ex-Mayor of Wellington, has wired the Borough Council stating his willingness to come to Stratford on Thursday next to give a recruiting address. He also stated lie would be pleased to give further addresses in any part of the district. The offer was accepted with thanks. A Maori was arrested at Toko Road yesterday afternoon, charged witli alleged cattle stealing at Hawera. He was brought up at the local Court this morning, and remanded to appear at Hawera on Thursday The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new Municipal buildings, has been postponed till Thursday week. The stone has not arrived, hence the postponment. Last night, Constable McSweency in arresting a man for drunkenness met with some opposition, with the resu:: that the culprit made his bow at the Court this morning charged with drunkenness, resisting the police, and breaking a window of the Central Co-op. Store. He was convicted for drunkenness, and fined 20s each on the other two charges, and ordered to pay the cost of the broken window A painful accident befell two Strat-for-1 residents this afternoon. Mr. R. Beckett and a staff of assistants were removing a large plate glass window from Mr. R. D. Lewers' shop, when the windows collapsed. In 'falling it struck Messrs. C. Marshall and A. Cameron, with the result that both were severely cut, Marshall on the arm and leg and Cameron on the hand. Both men had to have the cuts stitched up. Mr. Beckett escaped with only slight cuts. Mr. J. D. Healy, architect for the Municipal Buildings, reported at last night's meeting of the Council that the portion to be used by the Council was ready to receive the roof timber, and as soon as that was done the tiling of the roof could be proceeded with. Ho thought it would be the end of the montn before they would be finished. The workmen had only worked sixteen days last month owing to the bad weather.
