STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Tuesday. The monthly meeting of tho above Council was held last evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J W Boon) and Crs. Young, Mills, Thompson, Hunter, Hancock, Davcy, and Lawson. Mr. T. Milner waited on the Council and asked that an entrance be made to his property in Hawera Street. —Referred to Works Committee with power to act. FOOTBRIDGE ACROSS THE PATEA RIVER. His Worship moved: That tenders be called for a footbridge over the river at Ariel Street. The mover said he named Ariel Street, not that he was particular as to which street the bridge was erected on, but he thought Ariel Street was the best and most suitable place for it. It would enable children coming from the Technical School to use the bridge, and also take all the school children who now have to cross the railway line, which is not only dangerous, but a source of anxiety to teachers and parents. When the estimates were brought down, the overseer had suggested that a footbridge over Ariel Street would cost £75 and over Cordelia Street £llO, If the bridge was erected in Ariel Street it would enable the residents residing in Juliet, Ariel, and Orlando Streets to make use of it. On the other hand, there were very feV people residing in Cordelia Street. No doubt some people would like the bridge in Cordelia Street, but it was a matter of finance. Cr. Young seconded the motion pro forma, but thought the matter should be postponed owing to finance. He would have to oppose the motion, because they could not maintain the streets they had at present, and it would be useless going in for more expenditure. A petition was here presented from Geo. Smith and 52 other residents praying that a footbridge be erected across the Patea River in Cordelia Street. Cr. Thompson moved as an amendment that tenders be called for the erection of a footbridge over tha river in Cordelia Street. Cr. Hunter, in seconding the amendment, said one point had been missed, and-that was that property could be bought much cheaper in the localities where the proposed bridge was to be erected because it was isolated. To put the bridge in Ariel Street would be a waste of money. Cr. Hancock supported Cordelia Street because it was a through street. Cr. Mills said he was rather inclined to support Cr. Young's suggestion. His Worship said the reason ,he moved that Ariel Street should be the site wa.» that the school committee had advocated it, and he was studying the school children before grown up people. The amendment was carried, Crs. Young and Davey voting against both the motion and amendments. DOG NUISANCE. Two residents in Rosalind Street complained about a nuisance created by a resident having dogs not tied up under proper control. A further letter, signed by eight people, was received complaining that at various times the dogs had bitten them, and asking the Council to do something to protect them. His Worship moved that the letters be referred to the police, and that they be asked to take action. Cr. Mills seconded the motion, which was carried. WORK'S COMMITTEE.REPORT. Broadway footjftths. The overseer has been instructed to obtain the necessary material for this work, and to commence as early as possible the work of reconstruction. The Eltham Borough Council have been asked if they will hire their tar-sprayer to this Council for the above work. An application for the removal of a flush tank from his property made by Mr. J. Petrie has been acceded to. An application by Mrs. flews for an entrance to her property in Portia Street will be reported on at the Council meeting.—Report adopted. RESERVE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. Your committee beg to recommend that-a. Union Jack, and New Zealand ensign be procured, also that the dividing fence between the Council's property and Mrs. Kirkwood's be placed on the correct boundary line, each owner to pay half cost. In connection with the furniture required for the new building, Mr. Healy has been asked to prepare a plan and specification for the Council room requirements, and also an estimate of j cost. Prices are being obtained of the I requirements for the rest of the build-, l ing and will be submitted to the Council lin due course. It has been decided if the stone arrives in timej to lay the foundation stone of the new building on Thursday, 11th inst.—Adopted. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Borough overseer reported as follows:—269 yards of crushed metal have been placed on the Swansea Road, 115 yards on Pembroke Road, and 91 on Broadway between Regan Street and Pembroke Road. 300 yards of metal have been crushed during the month. Stone crushing will be finished at the stable paddock this afternoon. The crusher must be overhauled when the shingle at the ford site is crushed. Estimated cost of repairs £25. A short length of footpath on Pembroke Road near Mr. N. J. King's residence has been formed and gravelled. Part of the sides of Cloton Road has been trimmed up to prevent storm water from the road flowing into private properties. Broom has been grubbed on reserve occupied by Air. Skoglund. Outlets of tunnels in Orlando Street have been cleaned out. The flood gate to the Victoria Lake has been opened. The original outlet to the Lake has been opened out and the water which formed the Lake has gone. I would suggest that a new outlet to the east end of the tunnel be made by inserting 24-in concrete pipes, this would make a permanent job at the outlet end. Estimated cost, £io. Water lias been laid to Mrs. Evans' in Hamlet Street. Inspection of fire plugs has been put in hand but is not yet completed. I have prepared specifications for the supply of 200 cubic yards of boulders for Flind Road. Tenders will be placed before you at the next meeting. I have in hand the preparation of a plan showing the position of all the water mains in the Borough, and hope to have it ready before your next meeting. I also have the inspection ot premises in the business parts of the town in hand, but cannot say when this tedious work will be completed,—Report adopted,

Young moved that the request be granted during the pleasure of the Council; seconded 4 by Cr. Hunter Cr. Thompson moved an amendment that the Council regret it is unable to grant the request. He objected to other Residents connecting with a sewer laid on to the Council buildings. The motion was carried, and Cr, Thomson immediately gave notice of motion to rescind it. Mrs. Plows asked for a crossing to be made to her property in Portia Street. Referred to Works Committee. Mr. T. Mercer asked for a better entrance to his residence on Brecon Road.
