WAR CORRESPONDENTS.

STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL TAKES A HAND. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At Monday night's meeting of the Borough Council his Worship the Mayor moved: That this Council co-operate with the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce in entering an emphatic protest against the ill-advised utterances of irresponsible war correspondents of the Aslmiead Bartlett type, and others who, apparently for selfish ends, are doing their best to damage their country's interests and the interests of our Allies, and that the Government be asked to take steps to prevent irresponsible individuals in New Zealand from cabling messages Home reflecting on the Home Government, which they claim to represent as the opinion of the majority of the people of this Dominion. His Worship said the Home Government were not firm enough in allowing people to.make a living by travelling throughout England and putting distorted facts before the public. Cr. Hunter, in seconding the motion, said he hoped that other public bodies and chambers of commerce would endorse the resolution, and so make it effective. It would be particularly galling to our boys fighting on the Peninsula to read such stuff as was manufactured by these correspondents. As regards irresponsible individuals cabling Home their opinions, a man in Christchurch cabled to one of the English papers that the people of New Zealand were not in sympathy with the Home Government. It was certainly not the opinion of the people of this Dominion and was not the truth. Cr. Thompson did not think it wise for the Council to take any action in the matter. The whole truth had not been told regarding the Dardanelles, but returned soldiers were gradually bringing the truth home. A lot of what Mr. Aslmiead Bartlett said was the truth, and if necessary he could no doubt prove it. The motion was carried.
