CALL TO ARMS.
EIGHT RECRUITS YESTERDAY* THIRTY PER CENT. OF REJECTS, RECRUITING IN THE DOMINION. Eight men enlisted at New Plymoutli yesterday—five at the Defence Office and. "three at Mr. A. li, Gibson's recruiting office. This brings the total enlistments at New Plymouth for this week to fifteen.
Yosterday afternoon twenty-four men attended at the Defence Office for medical examination, which was carried out by Dr. Fookes. Of the twenty-four men eight were rejected, or over thirty per cent,, which is higher than should be the wise. Twenty-five per cent, is the percentage which the authorities expect on an average, but in Auckland it has been much lower, while in Wellington it has lately been about thirty per I cent., with even a higher percentage in some parts of the South Island. Of the eight men rejected at New Plymoutli yesterday two were defective in eyesight, two suffered from varicose veins, one from defective hearing, one is subject to fits, one had an old injury to a legv and one not normal heart. A Wellington telegram states that a return has been prepared by the Defence Department showing the total number of enlistments in the four military districts in New Zealand, also the numbers passed as (it and yet to lie for the week ending October 20. The percentages of total enlistments for each military district are as follows: Auckland 24.99, Wellington 45.60, Canterbury 1d.13, Otago f1.78. A soldier io camp writes:—"The I? and F Companies of the Ninth Reinforcements now in training at Tauhcrinikuu will be reinforcements to Lord Liverpool's Own, There are a immbei of Taraimki boys in these companies, and K Company is under the command of a weil-known Stratford Higli School master, Lieutenant Buckler, who ha? proved himself as a first-class officer and is deservedly very popular with his men. The Stratford Patriotic Committee have presented the Company with a drum, which was used for the first time the other day when marflhing on to the parade ground.
