OBITUARY.
MR. HENRY BEDFORD, The death of Mr. Henry Bedford eurred at his residence in New Ply mouth yesterday, at the age of "i years. Kor a considerable time past th< late Mr. Bedford has suffered from c very painful illness, but he bore it wit! remarkable fortitude, and bravely at tended to business until the last da; or two.
The late Air. Bedford was very wel known in Taranaki and Auckland. Ovei •forty years ago he came to New Zea land from England and settled in Christ ' church. For a while lie wont on tilt land, but afterwards entered the Cu» toms Department, in which service hi had a successful career. After somi years in Christehurch Mr. Bedford tran# ferred to Auckland, where he remaine( for fifteen years. During his residenci in Auckland Air. Bedford s work brought him in close touch with the mercantile community of that city, and he was ver; popular with a large circle of friends About twenty years ago Mr. Bedfor< was appointed Collector of Customs ai New Plymouth, and he resided heit until his death. Several years ago In 1 retired from the Government service but, always an uncommonly active man it was not liis nature tc' rest in thi evening of liis life, and he establinhei an office at New Plymouth whert amongst other duties, ho was secretary to the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce A few years ago Mr. Bedford becani' afflicted with a serious illness,' and ii tOIl! he went to ICngland to consul' specialists. The benefits which hi ir.iincd were only of a temporary mi lure, and lately the illness grail null; conquered his unusual vitality. The lßte Mr. Bedford did not plav > part in the public life of \"cu Plymouth, but he was well known through out the district, and his charming dift position provided him with a largt circle of friejids. Mr, Bedford uns't keen golfer and was one of the fitnlle men who first played the game in Wit Plymouth, on I lie Ngnmotn Club",' oriir insl course oil the Soutli Road, lit leaver n widow, two sons and tivi daughters, to whom much -.vmpalliv will be extended.
