COMMANDEERED MEAT.
A VOICE OF PROTEST. By Tsu&gvaph.—Special to Daily Xew* Palmerston N., East Xigltt. The matter of the sale of surplus meat commandeered by the Imperial authorities' formed the subject of discussion at a conference of representative farmers of the various North Island A. ami P. Associations, and of freezing companies' representatives held to-night. The meeting had been convened by the Egmout A. and P. Association.
Mr. 0. Hawken was voted to the chair, end the chairman mid Mr. \Y. Lysnar were the principal speakers. They agreed that while the price given by the Imperial Government was regarded by farmers as a fair one, it was not required that the Imperial authorities should allow the meat to he handled by speculators. It should either be handed direct on to British consumers at merely a reasonable profit, or else the producer Should receive the benefit of the increased price. Mr. Lysnar estimated that some one must have made a profit of a million and a-half on the surplus meat commandeered.
The shipping question was also touched on, and a resolution was passed that it was necessary for the whole question of commandeering our produce and shipping should be carefully and impartially investigated by the authorities, and that a committee be set up to assist and act in the matter.
The chairman, Messrs W. D. Lysnar <C4isbome), A. Masters (Stratford), Jas. Knight (Feilding), A. H. Waring (Waikato), and W. D. Powdrell (Hawera) were appointed a committee with power to add to their number. The. committee will wait on the Premier, who will visit Palmi-rston North to-morrow.
