Russell (Minister of Health) supplies the following list of the next-of-kin of the nurses reported drowned and missing. Drowned.—Nurse M. Rogers; next-of-kin, Thomas Rogers (father), Wainui, Bunks Peninsula.
Missing.—Nurse M. S. Brown; next-of-kin, Mrs. Brown (mother), Waimatuku, Southland. Nurse I. Clark; .next-of-kin, Miss Clark (sister), Ardgowan, Oamaru. NurseX. A. Pox; next-of-kin, Miss M. Fox' (sister), Hallenstein's Buildings, Queen Street, Auckland. Nurse M. (iorman; next-of-kin, Mr. P. Gorman (father), Waimate, Canterbury. Nurse M. M. Hildyard; next-of-kin, Mrs. B. A. Asked whether the Government would replace the nurses who have been In-,. Mr. Russell said the Home authoritichad already asked New Zealand for 100 more nurses and that .1.") more would be required for the two hospital ships—the Marnma, which is just about to be commissioned, and the Mnheno, which Will be entirely reconimissioned when 'he returns and fresh nurses put on board her. He added : "If the Home Government ask us for more we can readily supply them." A further question as to whether the fhivernnient will make any provision for the dependents of the nurses in question, and for the immediate needs of survivors, was referred to- the Hon. .las. Allen (Minister for Defence). Mr. Allen, said ihe immediate wants of the survivors were being attended to by the onieinls at the base hospital in Egypt, The New Zetland Oovcnnnent had authorised them to supply whatever equipments, uniforms, etc., might he necs. sary, and would he responsible for the cost. As to the dependents of the nurses, .they were provided for in (be War Pensions Act. Clause 12 provided for the payment of pensions for nurses and their dependents, and for the purpose of this section the word "dependents" was to be interpreted as in section 2, in the ease of soldiers. The. Minister added emphatically (hat ha should certainly recommend 'pensions in such cases.
Mr. Allen further stated that if the nurses had made any allocations to their dependents, these would be continued' a* in the ease of soldiers. TWENTY-TWO MEN DROWNED. By Telegraph.—Extraordinary. Wellington, Last Night. The Defence Department has received news that twenty-two men of the' hospital staff were drowned in the loss of the Marquette, and one man wan seriously injured.
