Mr.-J. A. Bridgeman has resigned his position as a member of the Taranaki County Council.. Mr. W. Nosworthy, M.P. for Ashburton, and Mr. Wright, of Windermere, have been visiting South Taranaki as the guests of Mr. 0. V. Pearce, M.P. Mr. J. D. Vernon, of Messrs Hint and Vernon, barristers and solicitors, Te Kuiti, and a son of Mr. J. E. Vernon, of I'almerston North, has received a commission in the Army Service Corps as senior lieutenant.

Mr. James Harvey, Fitzroy, received word last night that his second son, Corporal William died at Mudros on August 14, from wounds received in the Suvla battle of the previous week. Corporal Harvey, who went with the Fifths, was 27 years of age.

Constable Brown, who lias left the police force to go to the South Island, was presented last night with a silvermounted walking stick from his comrades of the force. In making the presentation, .Sergt. Bowdeu referred to Constable Brown's very good qualities and wished him good luck and prosperity in his new sphere of labor. Trooper Schaefer, one of the Wairarapa men who returned by the Tofua, received his injury at the Dardanelles in a most peculiar manner. He and five others were standing under a shed erected on sandbags, when the concussion from an exploded shell caused the building to topple over on them. Three of the men were killed, while the others received serious injuries.

Several of the nurses who were on hoard the transport Marquette, torpedoed in the. Aegean Sea, are well known locally. Nurse Jean Sinclair was formerly a teacher under the Taranaki Board, and then entered the niK'sing profession and received her training at the New Plymouth Hospital. About two years ago she left the institution in Order to take up private nursing, and left New Zealand with the second batch of nurses. , Nurse Bessie Young, of Hawera, was also for some years in' the New Plymouth Hospital. NV/se Micoll is a sister of Mr. W. P. Nicpll, of NewPlymouth.
