THE AMATEURS.

"THE MIKADO"-TO-NIGHT. It should not be necessary to remind New Plymouth 'theatre-goers of the opening performance of "The Mikado" at the Theatre Royal to-night, by th"e New Plymouth Amateur Operatic Society. That the public is looking forward with great expectation to the production of this popular comic opera is evidenced by the exceptionally heavy booking, and there is every indication that the amateurs will experience a moat successful season.

A full dress rehearsal was held last night and everything was carried out in a manner which augurs well for tonight's performance. In the last week or two the principals have perfected their parts, and last night worked in complete '.sympathy, while the chorus i 9 splendid. A particularly flue feature is the scenery, and Mr. Renaud has brought the orchestra up to a good standard. The cast includes Miss Maud 'Peart, late of TJie Court Cards,' who takes the part of Katisha. Miss Ivy Gilbert as Yum Yum, Miss Veta Gilbert as Kitti Sing, and Miss Kathie Bennett as Peep 80, promise to equal,, if not eclipse, their previous performance. Mr. Jack Haslam takes the part of Ko Ko, and as a comedian, perhaps, has not been equalled in any of the society's productions. Pooh Bah, in the hands of Mr. All Gray, is worked to an I equal standard of perfection. Nanki' Poo (Mr. E. Clark) does good work. The part of the Mikado is played by Mr. A. M. MacDiarmid, and that of } Pi3h Tush by Mr. W. H. Broome, both 'of whom aije seasoned performers. A very attractive feature of the performance is a ballet rendered by a number j of young ladies. To-night'a performance commences at 1 7.45 sharp. "The Mikado" will be repeated to-inorrow night and at Thursday night.
