Private Edgar Jones, son of Judge Jones, of the Native Land Court, who enlisted in England, has been dangerously wounded in France.

The many friends in this district of Sirs. C. Casey, mother of Mr. F. D. Casey, of Eltham, and of Mrs. Andrew Hughes, Kapuni, will regret to learn that she is lying seriously iB at her home, Marybank, Wanganui. Messrs J. Hawkens and F. M. Mills, who have been on a visit to Australia during the past few months, returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last night. Colonel Cossgrovc, V.D., Dominion Chief Scout, will arrive in Jfew Plymouth on Wednesday morning by train. In the evening he will inspect the local scouts, and will afterwards meet the District Committee, Miss Rosimi Huckmaii in singing at the Shaftesbury Theatre, London, in the Beeehiim (.'rand Opera Company, playing the leading .soprano roles in "Butterfly," "La Bohome," etc. An early settler died in Auckland last week in the person of Mrs. Marks, widow of the late Captain H. Marks. The deceased, who was ninety years of age, arrived by the Timandra at New Plymouth in February, 1842. She came to Auckland during the Taranaki war, and had resided in that city almost continuously ever since. She leaves several sons and daughters.
