MR. S. J. SMITH RESIGNS FROM COUNCIL ' TO STAND FOR THE MAYORALTY. Mr. S. J. Smith yesterday resigned his position as a member of the New Plymouth Borough Council. In forwarding his resignation, Mr. Smith wrote: "My reason for so doing is that I have decided to accept nomination to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of our late Mayor (Mr. J. E. Wilson). As chairman of the Works Committee I would like to take this opportunity of thanking councillors for the confidence and consideration shown during my term of offite, and trust it will be again my pleasure to preside over the Council. Knowing the important work we have in hand, and the several mattere requiring much attention, I will be only too pleased to lend what services I can until after the election." The nomination of Mr. Smith for the Mayoralty lias not yet been received, but the above letter expresses his definite intention to come forward. Mr. Smi|h is therefore the first candidate in the field. Mr. G. W. Browne will not yet make a definite statement as to what his intentions are. The names of several prominent citizens are freely mentioned, but none has taken a definite step yet. An election to fill the vacancy on the Council, caused by the retirement of Mr. Smith, will be held on Wednesday, Nov 3, .and nominations for the office will close on Wednesday, Oct. 27.
