STRATFORD.
OPENING OF BOWLING GREEN. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. In ideal weather the official opening of the Stratford Bowling Green took place this afternoon, in the presence of a large, gathering of local and visiting bowlers. Bowlers were present from Haw.era,, New Plymouth, Fitzroy, West End, Inglewood, and Palmerston North, while the ladies were in attendance in large numbers. Mr. J. W. McMillan (president), said h,e was pleased to see such a large attendance of the pulhlic, and with such a fine day and line green, howlers could not help hut enjoy themselves. He was especially pleased to see Mr. N. J. ICing', an old member of the club, present, after his illness, and hoped to soon see him playing on the green. Bowlers had—in fact, sport of alt kinds had—been privileged, because the "iboys in blue" and khaki had kept the enemy at bay. Bowling clubs in Taranaki had decided to institute a bowlers' fund in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, and lie meant to make it" plain that this fund was riot meant to detract from those already in existence, and lie felt sufe bowlers would do their part to swell this fund. He mentioned that two members, 'Messrs Geo. and A. C. 'Hunter, were at present at Trcntham training for the front, and he felt sure they had the good wishes of all present. He had much pleasure in presenting Mt. .Geo. Smart with the 0. M. Curtis Memorial trophy, for winning the championship singles. The past winners of the trophy were all old players, and he hoped to see one of the younger players' najne on the trophy next season. The president then asked Mrs. McMillan to throw the jack, and declared the green open for the season. The Egmont Club Orchestra, under Mr. R. Cottier, rendered fine selections during the afternoon. The usual President and Vice-Presi-dent match then took "place, and after an enjoyable game the Vice-President's team won by 165 to 147. The teams were as follow, the President's being mentioned first:— Chamberlain, Bickeron, R. Cock, McMillan (skip) 20, v. Elder, Edgecombe, Eowe, J. Masters (skip) 22. Kirby, Martin, C. His Worship the Mayor writes as follows:—"Your report of what I said at the monthly meeting of the Council, when discussing the electric light being turned off all niglit, does not convey what I intended. Your report reads: 'He did not think the town being in darkness on Saturday night would matter a great deal.' The meaning I wished to convey was that I did not think the town being without lights on Saturday night would matter a great deal, as the nights mentioned would be quite moonlight. Would you be good enough to make 4he correction!"
