FOR THE FRONT.

REPLY TO THE LAST APPEAL. SIXTY-POUR ENLIST IN THREE WEEKS. A STEADILY GROWING LIST. That the steady stream of recruits which has been directed to the Defence Office at New Plymouth ever since war broke out is being well maintained is demonstrated by the splendid response which has been made to the appeal for more men, which the Minister of Defence made on September 23. It is three weeks since the Minister told the country tha't reinforcements would be despatched every six weeks in future, and that to enable this to be done thousands of men were wanted to register at once. In that period the gratifying total of 64 names has been placed on the register at New Plymouth. As the New Plymouth Defence Office only taps New Plymouth, the coast, and the Clifton district, the result may be said to be very good, and if other parts of the province respond with similar enthusiasm it is assured that Taranaki will play its part as well in the future as it has done in the past. The number of men registered at New Plymouth on September 23 wa9 178, and this total was weakened on Monday by some 60 men who left to join the Ninth Reinforcements. The sixty odd men who have gone away are now replaced by the 64 who have enlisted, making the number now registered 182. Next Monday a further draft of 34 men will leave here to join the Ninth Reinforcements, leaving the number of men still available here as 148. It is estimated that 25 names may be deleted from this total to account for recruits who will prove to be medically unfit, but this will leave well over a hundred men to be called on in future. These figures are gratifying, but they are by no means satisfying.' More men are wanted, and tie authorities urge every man who can possibly do so to enlist at pnce. The great demand for men—it is keener now than it ever was —will mean a rapid absorption of the men now on the register here, and if the district is to preserve its proud position more men must come forward and register at once.. "Give me the men and the munitions I want," said lord Kitchener in a recent speech, "and I will guarantee my personal reputation that we hold the wir in the hollow of our hands." Taranaki cannot give munitions, but she can give many more men. THE LATEST RECRUITS.
