BRITAIN.
LABOR PARTY'S APPEAL, Times and Sydney Sun Services. London, Oct. 8. The Labor Party's recruiting manifesto says that at no time in history had the nation faced a crisis of such gravity. Under the voluntary system Britain had raised great armies, but if the principle was to toe vindicated at least 30,000 recruits weekly must be! raised to maintain the efficiency of the armies and secure such a victory as would free the world from fear of the military tyranny of Germany. Thousands of men of military age and fitness had failed to join the colors for whom equipment and munitions were ready. The party appealed to them to take up immediately a share of the burden and to preserve, the vital interests of the nation. It was not want of courage prevented them enlisting, but failure to appreciate the seriousness of the situation. "We know that defeat or an inconclusive peace will mean not only the loss of prestige for the nation and tfie certainty that the conflict will be renewed in a few years, but the loss of personal liberties which it has taken centuries of ell ort to win. The responsibility for victory or defeat rests with those who have not yet responded to the call." PORTUGUESE EXPEDITION London, Oct. 8. An Exchange message from Lisbon reports without comment that transports conveying expeditionary forces have sailed for Mozambique.
