ON THE SEA.
NAVAL OFFICER'S EXPLOIT. London, Oct. 8. The Admiralty states that the commander of a submarine in the Sea of Marmara reported that Lieut. Doyly Hughes volunteered to attack a railway. He proceeded in a small boat, from which lie dropped into the water aiul pushed a raft carrying a demolition charge and weapons to the shore. He then climbed a cliff and blew up the line 150 yards from three men seated beside the railway. Though the fuse was muffled the men were aroused and followed him and shots were exchanged. Finding it impossible to return by the place he had ascended he went further cast. The charge exploded as lie entered the water and fragments fell between a quarter and half a mile. He bWam seaward and blew a whistle, which was not heard, as his boat was behind the cliffs. After resting 011 the rocks he swam at daybreak round the last point. The whistle was then heard and simultaneously came shouts from the cliffs overheard and rifle fire was opened on the l>oat. Hughes was finally picked up extrejnely exhausted after swimming a mile in his clothes.
