VARIOUS ITEMS. Sydney, Oct. 9. A soldier's letter says that the New Zealanders made a charge, and, when they took the trenches, found that the Turks had their machine-gunners chained to the guns so that they could not retreat. Over 3000 railway and tramway men have enlisted. The annual report of the Swimming Association states that '209 swimmers have enlisted. Melbourne, Oct. 7. Replying to the Government's inquiry regarding the control of liquor and militar morality in Egypt, the commanding officer cables that reports are much exaggerated. Steps have been taken to control the sale of liquor. Sydney, Oct. 9. The latest hospital ship arrivals have been instructed not to give their experiences to the Press.
