"MIZPAH." "Mizpah," an adaption of the Passion Play, will be screened in the Theatre Royal to-night. Hitherto it has been only the poet who could make us look down into the innermost soul or into the great light of genius; only the author of romance and history who could study and search the obscure reason o! human vicissitude. Now, by the aid of cinematography, we view the Passion Play exactly as it has been presented to most of the crowned heads of Europe. The task of constructing this spectacular Eastern drama so definitely and wonderfully, we would reiterate, has never before been accomplished, and we feel confident that this remarkable film will be i proclaimed by the public as one of the finest pictures of modern times. THE EMPIRE. An excellent collection of films will be shown in the Empire to-night and also this afternoon at 3 p.m. The principal item is Gaumont's great educational war film, "The Might of the Allies." It faithfully depicts the fighting forces of the Allies. This film lias drawn record houses at all the large theatres in the centres, and has been praised by the public, pulpit and press. Two prizes of £1 Is each are offered to school children under the age of 15 for the best essay on 'The Might of the Allies." Fuller particu-j lars of this competition are advertised in another column. Other films include "The Stoning," in three parts, which features that remarkably clever little artist Viola Danna. The story tells that Ruth Fenton, a beautiful young member of the church choir of the village, meets Alec, who persuades her to elope with him. Very soon Alec begins to maltreat him, with the result that she leaves him. Ruth's mother is failing fast, and Ruth is sought out by the minister of the home town and persuaded to return. On the following Sunday, when she takes her place in the choir the other girls all walk out of the church, as also does a portion of the congregation. The next morning the poor girl's body is found in the lake. The minister delivers a strong sermon, taking as his test, "Judge Not!" At the funeral he brands the congregation as murderers. In happier vein is "Billy's Wager," a Vitagraph fun-maker. A beautiful and interesting scenic is "The Channel Isles." "Our Soldiers in Egypt" shows the boys of the sth Reinforcements and the Maori volunteers in camp at Mena. The usual "War Gazette" and some excellent cartoons complete the bill. This programme will Btart at 7.55 and will finish at about 10.30. The usual prices of admission prevail.
