NATIONAL PROVIDENT FUND.
AND FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. By Telegraph.— Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. When the National Provident Fund Amendment Bill was before the House to-night, a new clause was moved by Mr. A. Harris (Waitemata), with a view of presenting payment being made, as commission, to any person other than those permanently engaged in the work of the fund. i-"«HSW
The discussion which followed was largely on the lines of the alleged antagonism between Friendly Societies and' the National Provident Fund. Several members expressed themselves as not unfavorable to the Fund, but wished to eliminate any suggestion of unfair competition. Mr. C. Talbot (Temuka), as a keen supporter of Friendly Societies, considered It open to question whether the Provident Fund was doing Friendly Societies as much harm as some people thought. He advised the withdrawal of the proposed clause.
Hon. W. F. Massey said he was quK« prepared to recommend a conference between Ministers and representatives. of Friendly Societies, when any difference might be adjusted and legislation introduced.
The proposed clause.was rejected on the voices.
