STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Corresponded.), COUNCIL NOTES. Stratford, Tuesday. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, the following business was. transacted:—The Taumarunui Patriotic Committee wrote to the Council to endorse the motion, asking the Government not to enforce the Gaming Act in regard to art unions, providing they are 'held for patriotic purposes. The Council decided not to take any action. The high cost of living was brought under notice in the form of a petition from the borough employees, asking tlie Council to iifcreaso their wages by Is per day. The request was acceded to by the Council, to date from September 215 th. An amendment that the increase should date from Monday last was defeated. The Council decided npt to light the street lights on moonlight nights. One councillor suggested that if the Council go on retrenching much more there will soon 'be no need to light the streets at all. With regard to the section that was formerly occupied by Mr. Mweer,' and now vacant, it was decided to ask the Railway Department to widen the present footpath by at least 12 feet, and make a fresh entrance for vehicles of at least 20 feet. It was decided to extend the brick area to Seyton Street. His Worship the Mayor is leaving on a holiday visit to Auckland, and during his absence Cr. Thompson will act as deputy mayor. Cr. Youug withdrew his notice of motion regarding the rescinding of the motion re valuation of the Electrical Supply Company's plant. Mr. Sullivan, borough overseer, was granted three weeks' leave of absence. The Stratford Fire Brigade are making preparations for the annual Taranaki demonstration, which is to be held at Stratford this year. At last, night's meeting of the Council it was decided to put in the water supply and plugs in Victoria Park, where the fixture is to be I held.
