HOCKEY.
LADIES' TOURNAMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 4. The New Zealand ladies' hockey tournament, the gross proceeds of which go towards the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, opened at the Basin Reserve this afternoon, under fair weather conditions. The game 3 decided were keenly contested, and marked by good play. Results:— Wellington beat Wanganui, by 14 to nil; Manawatu beat Canterbury by 4 to 3; Wairarapa beat Hawke's' Bay by 2 to 1. KAPONGA DEFEAT WHAKATANE. The final for the championship of Taranaki was played at Inglewood on Saturday, when Kaponga, winners in the southern division, met and defeated Whakatika, the northern division winners, after a close and interesting game, by 2 to 1. In the first spell Olga Wallach scored for the losers. The winners scored both their goals in the second spell. Messrs Stephens and Rolleston were the referees.
