An unprecedented scene occurred in the Ihuna, many members weeping, when the Minister for War was describing how the Siberian Fusiliers Regiment was almost wiped cut by poisonous gas. A position, he said, had to be held at all costs, and not a man left his place. They had heroically struggled to resist the fatal fumes, many falling unconscious, and had continued firing in a half stupor, rallying again and again for another shot until utterly helpless. The survivors continually ran along tiie trenches firing at different points to make the enemy believe that they were stiil strongly held. The gas penetrated far rearward, killing staff officers and two-thirds of a company coming up to the relief. The Duma stood in silence in honor I of their glorious courage.
