THE DARDANELLES
ON GABA TEPE. SIR lAN HAMILTON'S KEP.ORT. Wellington, August 4. The High Commissioner reports, under date London, August 3, 2.20 p.m.: — Jir lan Hamilton reports that on Monday, on the right of the position held by the Australian and New Zealand corps a successful attack was carried out against a network of Turki-h trenches which wore beginning to threaten the safety of the advanced post, called 'The Tasnianian Post." The attack consisted of a bombardment of neighboring works and the explosion of three mines under a section of the trench. The section was occupied immediately and another section rushed with tile bayonet. The Turks made no counter-attack. At least seventy Turks were killed. The result was the gain of the crest of a ridge which had materially improved the position of that 'section of the line.

London, August X A correspondent at the Dardanelles writes that a German spy, speakingl perfect English, summoned Captain McDonald and Lieutenant Elson to a | rendezvous with Colonel Pope on the' slope of a liiii. The unsuspecting of-! ficers arrived first and fell into the hands of a hand of Turks. Seeing their colonel coming thev shouted a warning. Without hesitation he jumped thirty feet, landing on a patch of soft sand as a shower of bullets swept the place ivhere lit had stood, and escaped unhurt.
