A QUESTION OF ADVERTISING.

DISCUSSION AT THE EDUCATION BOARD. The proprietor of the Taranaki Dailv News tor warded a letter to the Tara'naki Education Board yesterday pointing out that as the result of a recent resolution the Daily; News had .been cut out of the advertising- of teachers' vacancies for this year. He claimed that as 80 per cent, of the teachers in laranaki subscribed to the Daily News it was only right that these, teachers should have the opportunity of reading the advertisements calling for applications.

Mr. W. A. Ballantyne, chief inspector, asked for his opinion, stated that fully 80 per cent, of the teachers throughout Taranaki read the- Daily News, and if they did not advertise in that paper the teachers would ibe prevented from applying, lie referred to the few applications received for the vacancies recently advertised, and considered it would he a wise policy to advertise in the Daily News. Mr. J. Young supported. He was absent when the previous resolution was passed, or he would have protested then. He did not object to other papers receiving the advertisement, but he objected to the News being left out. The Taranaki Daily News circulated in every part of Taranaki, and had considerable claims to a. share of the Board's advertising.

Mr. Masters also agreed. He was possibly to some extent responsible for the position, on account of his advocacy of the Stratford paper. From the point of view of utility! to tlw board, the News was certainly better than the other papers. Mr G. A. Adlam thought it would be better to advertise in bot ! i papers. Mr. Morton said he was not present when the resolution was passed, probably on the score of economy. If it had proved that they had not received tho number of applications expected, he certainly thought they should make an alteration. He did ' not favor advertising in one paper only, and considered that the News should -be added.

Mr. R. Masters then gave notice to move at next meeting that the resolution carried at the March meeting re advertising ibe rescinded.
