FIRE BRIGADE (BALL. The residents of New Plymouth have in the past never failed to exhibit a practical appreciation of the excellent services rendered to the town by its volunteer fire brigade. The opportunity of helping the funds of the brigade which has been most utilised is the annual 'ball which, this year, takes place on the King's (Birthday, Thursday next, and, though the exceptional gravity of affairs at present is not favorable to a function of that nature, yet, in spite of the heavy calls on the spare cash of the people in connection with war funds, dt is only fitting that our firefighters should not be allowed to suffer from wants of funds. It is, therefore, all the more desirable that the citizens who owe a deep debt of gratitude to the brave men, who protect their lives and property from the ravages of fire, should liberally and unanimously cooperate in making the function a financial success, the more so as on this occasion half tho •proceeds will be given to the Red Cross Fund for our siek and wounded " boys "at the front. The purchase of a ticket is only a small affair, and we cannot too strongly press the. claims of the brigade on the favorable notice of the community. The Fire Board had provided a very suitable new building for the central station, and it is manifest that the brigade ■will have to depend on public support for a number of accessories and other expenses that are not met by the board. The cause is thoroughly deserving of all the assistance that the townspeople can give.
