A fire occurred at Jfgacrc on Sunday afternoon. Mr. IT. C. Tavlofs bacoiicuring shed by some means caught lire and was destroyed. An adjoining shed caught fire, and several implements, including a new plough, were lost. Some sacks of potatoes were also roasted. A bucket brigade extinguished the flames. A fine' example was set by a little girl of Wavecley named Jessie Saunders recently. When the collecting was started to provide funds for the hospital ship, this little girl asked her mother how much she had in her money-box, and when told the amount she said she wanted 10s, and, on this being given to ( her, she immediately bought IDs worth of red cross bandages and handed them in to the secretary. It is pleasing to note that when the object for which the bandages were required were made known the little patriot was supplied with all she required at cost price. Thursday next is the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of his Majesty King George, his Majesty being born on June 3, 1805. The day. will be observed as a statutory holiday, but by his Majesty's desire tliere will be no celebrations other than the ilying of Hags. The Daily News will be published as usual. The proprietor of a certain hotel in Taranaki, within not very great distance of the Eltham Post Office, some time ago placed a Belgian box on his counter, and decided to "fine" everyone whom he heard using language that wus unparliamentary. The proprietor states that when the box is opened it will bo found to contain a good few pounds, made up in silver and copper.— Argus. Writes G. T?. 11. Homer to the Hawera Star:—l have no doubt about the identity of the new comet with the comet " Hellish," but agree that its position differs from its expected place by a few degrees. But, it must be remembered. this comet was discovered only last January, arid there would not have been time or opportunity to calculate the correct orbit, which requires several exact observations of its position amongst the stars at wide intervals. Shortly we m'ay expect more accurate results. The comet is now heading for the South Pole. Early in Juno it will be easily seen with the naked eye, a few degrees above lAlplia in the constellation Pavo (a bright star about 30 degrees below an;! to the right of the tail of the Scorpion). Field-glasses will show a faint tail. At a meeting of the Loyal Excelsior Lodge of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity, the report of the committee appointed to arrange for the celebration of the jubilee of the lodge was received and considered. The lodge unanimously decided that, as so many of its members were serving the 'Empire at the Dardanelles and elsewhere, it would be more in accord with the principles of Oddfellowship to forego festivities and vote the cost to the fund now being raised for the hospital ship. One of the members is amongst the wounded. The, sum'' of ten pounds was voted as a jubilee gift to the Hospital Ship Fund. Complete arrangements have been made for the social, which is to be held in the Carrington School this evening, to farewell Messrs. L. Okey, H. Ryder, C. Boswell and H. Anyone requiring 'Blankets should not fail to see the Melbourne Clothing Company's stock which' was contracted for as far back as .June, 1014, for delivery this winter.
