A few days ago the Government steamer llinemoa searched for a shoal reported off Waitara. On arrival at Wellington on Thursday, Captain Bollons reported that he was unable to discover the shoal patch, which was stated to be five miles and a half north-west of Waitara.
Mr. P. S. Whitcombe, secretary to the Taranaki Education Board, has received an intimation from the Minister of Education that it is the King's wish that beyond the closing of schools on the King's 'Birthday and Empire Day no ceremonies should he held. The message adds that nothing bevond the flying of flags is desired.
The Wanganui Education Board on Wednesday passed a resolution applying to the Education Department to disestablish the Hawera District High School and to establish a technical high school. The hoard has made previous efforts to. disestablish flic present school, but with' no success. A sub-committee was set up to go into details of staffing, curriculum and other matters.
A hare and rabbit drive, promoted by Messrs. If. G. Cooper and Herbert Thomas for the entertainment of a party of visitors from Akaroa, was held at Oxford, and resulted in a bag of 213 hares ami rabbits. These (says the Christ•church Press) are to be frozen and forwarded to London for the benefit of wounded soldiers.

A large motor-car was lying on the roadside at''the Devil's Elbow near Turakina on Thursday, says the Wanganui Chronicle. The ear had gone over n bank about 10ft., and was resting up against a tree. This is a very dangerous spot and one where many cars have come to grief.
The speed limit of motor traffic under the new by-laws will be Devon Street from Clinton Street to Liardet Street 20 miles an hour. Devon Street from Liardet Street to Queen Street 12 miles nn hour, Brougham Street and Egmont Streets 12 miles an hour, St. Aubyu Street from Brougham Street to Cutfield Road IS miles an hour, other streets in the borough 20 miles an hour.
