A Statement appeared in the Vhiv-d----cliurcii Press on .Monday that Colonel Smith had received a cable irom Major Loach, at Cairo, 'T'rgvntly; need £IOO for wounded." A largely attended meeting was held nt Port Chalmers last evening to consider a proposal to arrange for volunteers to proceed Home to help in the manufacture .of war material. The M.ayor said he. had lven approached by some men who hail failed to pass the medical tests and who were anxious to go Home to assist in some other capacity. He liiWl w:rcd to the Hon. J. Allen, who was communicating with the Home authorities.

It was not only young men who wanted to go, as Mr. Isaac Stevenson, of Stevenson and Cook, proprietors of the Maori Ironworks, and others in similar circumstances were prepared to go to England and don overalls to work as mechanics for war purposes. The (lock workers of Port Chalmers were also anxious to help. Mr. -Stevenson suggested that the names of those willing .to offer their services be taken and forwarded to Mr. Allen. The suggestion was adopted, and Messrs Stevenson and Cook were the first to sign the list. Twenty others followed, and a committee was appointed to procure further signatures. INTERNMENT OP GERMANS FAVORED. Palmerston North, Last Night. A great recruiting demonstration was held here to-day. .Speeches were delivered liy Mr. IYV. F. Massey, Dr. MeNab and Mr. Buick, the member for the district. Thirty men enlisted. The following resolution was carried: ''lnasmuch as we are no longer at war with an ■honorable nation, but with a combination of criminals, whose methods are those of assassination, piracy and murder in the most revolting and fiendish forms, this meeting urge on we Government, and especially the Prime Minister, that they communicate with the Imperial Government emphasising the necessity of confiscating to the Crown the property of non-naturalised Germans; (2) that Germans naturalised in New Zealand be required to prove their loyalty to the British Crown >bv forswearingCerman citizens 1 ! ip; (3) that unnaturalised Germans be interned forthwith; (4) that Germans, naturalised or not, proved to have expressed views derogatory of the British or Allies, or are hostile, to the cause of Great Britain and the Allies, should be immediately arrested and tried for high treason.

DISLOYAL SUBJECTS AND FOES. Dunedin, Last Night. At a large public meeting in the Garrison Hall to-night, the Mayor presiding, a resolution was carried asking the Government to intern all non-naturalised enemy subjects, and that all disloyal naturalised subjects be placed under restrait and disloyal British subjects dealt with according to military law.
