Lareonvlie' as Mayor took.-lace-on Wednesday night in the Co\mcH Chambers in the presence of the councillors. Mr. Lnrcombe, after taking the'usual declaration, thanked old councillors for tlie past support and welcomed -Dr, 'SimniQii-, Messrs Beardmore, ahd- Hicks to the council table, and hoped thdt the same conditions would prevail during :thc next two years. Mr. Larconibe further added that the position of Mayor, apart from •.being the first citizen of: the town, was not always a sinecure. Councillors were somewhat in the same position., lie ad- - Vised them to do their best, for the town, according to the dictum of their conscience, and not to be influenced by outside criticism, as outside criticism was often influenced by persons holding an incomplete knowledge .of facts and possibly by prejudice, in conclusion, he •remarked upon the progress made liy the town during the last two years, and hop-ed-that it would continue. But this progress would only, contimiefby .turning a deaf ear to the advocacy of wild-cat schemes by outsiders. C. Christensen, who followed-, :co'igrat\ilated Mr. Larcombe ofragaiu occupying the mayoral chair, he being elected unopposed—a fact which .clearly indicated that he had the confidence of the burgesses.
Cr. May, who followed, complimented His Worship on again occupying the mayoral chair, and referred to'. the' splendid progress made under Mr. Larcombe's administration. He had not 1 tlie slightest hesitation in saying that never before in the annals of I'atea history had such progress been made. Cr. Bennett, in welcoming Mr. Larcombe back, could only endorse the. previous speaker's remarks, and he hoped that both old and new councillors would realise that the obeying of the chair was the only way to facilitate the work of the council. Cr. Honeyfield complimented the. Mayor oil again assuming office and stated that the compliment extended from councillors and ratepayers alike. Crs. Beardmore anil Hicks spoke in similar strain, and stated, as new councillors, it w : as their intention to put on a united front and march for progress.
