Till'] BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of tin- Waitara Borough Council was helil 011 Wednesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. K. iieckbi.ssinger), ami C:x .Spiirdlc, Bhinchard, Brabant, Tucker, Correspondence was read from the Public ' Works Department informing the council that Mr. Millar, of the. Department, would visit Waitara for the purpose of inspection of its electric lines. Mr. Marlow, secretary of the newly formed Municipal Brass Band, applied for an increase of subsidy for the'band. It was stated that the hand would give nine open-air concerts and three indoor concerts during the year. It was decided to increase the subsidy from £lO to £2O.
Mr. 11. Tate wrote stating that he had been unable to obtain the crusher : n connection with his No. 5 contract, and asked for an extension of time, stating that lie was applying to the Clifton County Council at its next meeting for the use of their plant, and would push on with the work with as little delay as possible. A month's extension of time was granted. • Mr. Frank Clare wrote asking for an entrance to his section. It was agreed to.
Mr. G. V. Tate wrote asking the council to do certain work on Buttermore Terrace, stating that the work could be done with the grader at a very small cost. It was decided to inspect the place. A committee consisting of His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Spiirdl? and Brabant was appointed to deal with the matter. Miss Staeham wrote in connection
with matters relating to the unveiling of the oblisk of the old soldiers' cemetery. It was decided to call a public meeting witli a view of getting the public to take part in the unveiling of the monument.
A good deal of time was taken up in discussing a grievance between Mr. Saunders and the local fire brigade in connection with the action of two of the firemen when on duty at the St. John Hall during a picture entertainment in stopping the sale of tickets owing to the hall being overcrowded. It was decided to acknowledge the letters from Mr. Saunders Slid the fire brigade, and express regret that aiiy difference between the firemen on duty at the hj.ll and Mr. Saunders' manager had occurred.
Mr. Vaughan waited on the council us a deputation from the East-side Seaside Improvement Society, asking the council's assistance in improving the road leading to the. bpaeh. It was decided to inspect the locality with a view of assisting in the work. Mr. Cliadwick wrote drawing the council's attention to the dangerous practice of children riding bicycles oil the footpaths. It was decided to draw tlie inspector's attention to the practice. Messrs Borthwiek and Son applied for the renewal of their slaughtering license. The estimates for the coming year were read and adopted. > ' Cr. Spurdle moved that this council place on record the valuable and faithful services rendered by Mr. .Jenkins, late Mayor, also the hlte Councillors, Messrs Birdling, Rattonbury, 1 Longman, and Morgan. Cr. Braba'nt secohded and the, motion was carried. ''
