TRAGIC END OF AN EXPERIMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. ! Pahiatua, Last Night. A shocking fatal accident occurred at Pahiatua to-day. Fred Hedges, aged 20 years, the eldest son of Mr. F. Hedges/ jeweller, a young man of an experimental turn of mind, had improvised a small carbide gasometer in his bedroom at his parents' residence. Just before dinner lie was, it is thought, apparently inspecting it, and an explosion occurred, Hedges receiving the full force in the face. He sustained injuries to the face, eyes, and head. He was removed to the hospital in an unconscious condition, and succumbed two hours later. The mother of the young man, with two members of the family, is at present on a visit to Auckland.
