A WHITE AUSTRALIA.
JAPANESE COMMISSIONER ON THE "COLOR LINE." PROPHESIES A CHANGE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, April 10. Discussing the question of the invasion of the Pacific by Japaneße in relation to the "White Australia" policy Dr Mura, Japanese trade commissioner, yesterday said: "I shall be perfectly candid. Just as the tiger cannot change its stripes, so we cannot alter our color, but I think you have already found our hearts are in the right place. What r.he future has in store we do not know ?s far as this delicate question is concerned, but we are in hopes tliat, after this terrible war is over, the overseas dominions of Great Britain will think more kindly of us than they have dene in tin past. It may be that Australian opinion on the 'white' question will change. So far as we are concerned, our inq.i'ries in-Australia I'iive led us to understand flint the alfWmJe taken up if 'constitutional.' We regard that attitude as unreasonable and unfair, nevertheless we do not bear ill-will in consequence. We are offering the 'right hand of fellowship' in trading relations ,ini' we are in hopes that the present cum mission will Iciir giod fruit. The-e should be gi'MC benefit en belli side.should be great benefit on both sides and, so far as we are concerned, we only want what your Prime Minister describes as a fair deal."
