An Auoktand; telegram state* that the Prime Minister's son, Mr. F. C. Massey, solicitor, of Auckland, is to leave for, Trentham in about a week to join the reinforcements draft as quartermasfersergcant.
Messrs. C. ft A. Senior, 8.A., and P. A. Taylor,, M.A., masters at the Auckland {grammar School, have resigned their positions in order to join the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. H is stated in a private letter from Egypt that Major F. Chapman, of the Auckland .Regiment of Mounted Rifles, with the Expeditionary Force, had the misfortune early in February to. have two fingers blown off. Major Chapman was officer commanding the Waikato Regiment of Mounted Rifles in the Auckland Territorials. It is understood that Mr T. Hutchinson will be appointed Magistrate in Milton and Lawrence districts (Otago), vice Mr K ,W. Burton, who has been transferred to the Bay of Islands. Mr chihson was formerly stationed at Timaru, but he has been relieving Mr Geo. Cruickshank at Invercargill during the. past twelve months. A pioneer settler of the Kaiwaiwai* district passed away on Thursday, in the person of Mr Thomas Smith. The deceased had reached, the great age of--93 years. He came to New Zealand in 1840, in the Duke of Roxburgh, in company with Mr W. 0. Williams, the late Mrs Tockcr, and Mr William Udy. He leaves two sons, two daughters and great-grandchildren.
The retirement, of two of tho Welling, ton Harbor Board's eldest officers was the occasion for complimentary reference by members of tho Board, to'their long and faithful services. Captain Henry Johnson, for more than a quarter of a century "carried out the rcspon ■ sible duties of-'Chief Pilot and Harbormaster of the port, and Mr Henry Geo. Claiidge, first-assistant had been connected with tho wharf 'since 1874.
Mr. H. C. Evans, who Ims been connected with the ABC Boot Shop for some yearn past, leaves next week for Te Kuiti, where he opens ,i n business. Mr. Evans was an enthusiastic and keen rifle shot. His successor is Mr. H. E. B'Ulen, of Auckland, and, as Mr. Bullen haV had considerable experience in military matters and is a lieutenant of the Auckland National Reserve, he should prove a welcome addition to the New Plymouth Defence Rifle Ciub.
A very old colonist in the person of Mr, Reuben White passed away at his resi--1 donee in Eltliam on Tuesday afternoon, at the ripe ago of 78 years. The late Mr. White arrived in Auckland from tho Old Country 57 years ago, and farmed in that district for some years. He was in th K Maori waT, and was the recipient of a veteran's medal. He came to Taranaki about 38 years ago and fetdtled near Waitara, and some Time later he came to T e Hoti, where he farmed for some years. He was for ■ Bom* time a director of the Eltliam Dairy. Company. The late Mr. White is survived by his widow and one son (Mr. C. White, Eltliam) and four daughters (Mrs. 11. Sutherland, Te AwamutujMrs. R. J. Linn, Normanby; Mrs. J. L. Campbell, Eltliam; and Mrs. H. R, Jenkins,Eltihara).
