NEW PLYMOUTH GOLF CLUB,
The first match of the season was played on Saturday, partly to try the links before the Easter Tournament. Although Easter falls early this season, the caretaker has the course and greens in good order. The following are the six best scores:—
TOURNAMENT.
Golfers are reminded that entries for tiie Easter tournament close on Wednesday, 31st March. As the 31st is a bank holiday, the committee will be gla;l if players will hand their entries to Mr. C. Denny-Brown as soon as possible. The ladies' matches will be played on Monday or Tuesday, commencing each day about 11 a.m.
The pay for caddies during the Easter tournament is to be Is fid per round of eighteen holes.
Lunch and afternoon tea will be obtainable at the pavilion. It is hoped that there will be good entries. Players who can get three good days of golf at the commencement of the season should be able to show a decided improvement in their p:ay. Players and those caddying are reminded that unless «hey are wearing boots or shoes with low and broad heels they cannot go on any of the putting greens.
TARAHUA CLUB. Favorer! by fine weather, the Tarahua Club (Carrington Road) celebrated the opening of the season by holding a mixed foursome handicap match, the winners being Miss Gideon and J. Canwoll, with a net score of 73. The fairway and putting groons were in fine order. The president of the club, Mr, R. Cock, made a happy speech, urging the members to continue to work together for the good of the club, and wishing them a very successful season.. In conclusion, lie expressed much pleasure in declaring the season duly open and also in donating the sum of two guineas for the purchase of a ladies' trophy to be competed for during the season now entered on. 'lhe announcement was greeted with loud applause. The lady members excelled themselves in their afternoon fr.'a arrangements. The best three cards returned were: —Miss Gideon and Cnnv/.ill 73 (nett), Miss Free and Wylie (Waitara Club) 78 (nett), Miss Hammond and Berridgo 70. > Mr. E. S. Douglas, the open golf champion of the Dominion, intends to compete at the Australian championships, to be held at Sydney'next September. Tlie champion lias established in New Zealand a record that will take some breaking. Since landing here some two years ago lie has won the Open Championship of New Zealand. 1913 and IflU; Professional Championship of New Zealand, 1914; Christmas Tournament, Trentham Wellington, 1914., In lfi!3 he w-as runner-up in this event. Mr. Douglas holds the record for the following links: —Dunedjn, 71; Nelson, 70; Wanganui, 71 He has also holed out at .Trentham in 70 (record 68), and Auckland 71 ('record 70). At the ago of .19, in the Scottish Professional Championships, held at Cardross, Glasgow, Mr. Douglas finished fifteenth out of a lav?e field of about 200. During the last five years, competing in tournaments held in England, America, and New Zealand, he has always been in the prize list.
