(Copy of Memorandum for Director of Dairy-produce, Wellington.) London, October 30, 1014.
Somewhere about the beginning of the present year I was approached by a firm of West End dairymen, who asked me for information as to the best brands of New Zealand butter arriving in this country at that time. With this object in view I persuaded one of the partners of the firm to accompany me on my rounds of inspection of the Tooley Street warehouses, with the result that they selected some of our leading brands as being suitable for their trade. In May last, this firm secured a considerable nuantity of the above brand to enable them to maintain a regular supply for their clients during the summer season. Receiving a ring from this firm again, asking for similar information regarding the coming season, 1 learn that they had still some of the Inglewood butter i n their cold store, the supply having been reduced to two boxes. I expressed a desire to have an opportunity of examining some for myself, and the firm in question kindly offered to let me have half-a-pound for examination purposes. This morning I had an opportunity of doing so. and I am very pleased indeed to report, that the quality of the butter is irreproachable. To the uninitiated the butter would appear to be almost freshly made, there, being not the least sign of deterioration of quality so far as I have been able to discern lip to the present time. It is my intention to keep this butter for a few days longer, just to watch the effect that normal temperatures will have upon its keeping qualities. According to my judgment this butter, at the, very latest, must have been made in last March, and I feel that the Inglewood Dairy Company are to be congratulated upon the very high grade of butter that they have been turning out. If all our dairy companies were to turn out butter of this class, it would bear out my contention that there is no higher grade of butter made than that of Zealand superfine creamery, and if we are fortunate enough to attain such a condition of uniformity, our position on the English markets would be unassailable. (.Signed) W. WRIGHT. Inspector of Dairy-produce.
